Apprentice representative – Making a difference in the company

Besides my apprenticeship as a merchant for office management I also study real estate management. How I can get everything under one roof and which conclusion I draw after two years I´ll tell you now.

A lot has happened since my last post. My third year of training at TÜV Rheinland began on 1 August 2019. As announced, I have meanwhile started a parallel course of study, more precisely: a distance learning course at the IUBH (International University of Applied Sciences in Bad Honnef), with a focus on real estate management. However, I had to put the degree at the back a bit because the first part of the final examination was in front of me and I wanted to do well. With the help of my girlfriend, I managed to do that and can now shorten my apprenticeship to two and a half years. This allows me to concentrate on my studies as quickly as possible after my apprenticeship. Besides all the learning, I still try to go to the gym four to five times a week and take time for myself and my hobbies. A break from learning stress is very important for me to come down.

In my second year of training there were ups and downs, which also gave me a lot to learn about myself. Among other things, we experienced two changes of trainers, wrote the first final examination, elected an Class representative / apprentice representative and got to know two other departments. The majority of the employees were honest and nice to me as an apprentice. Here we get to know different departments and thus also many people. In the process, you learn how to work with different personalities. I was able to develop myself by dealing with more difficult personalities.

The election as class representative

After another year at TÜV Rheinland, we apprentices have been given the opportunity to make a difference. There was an class representative election. In principle, a class representative has the same tasks as a trainee or youth representative. In my last blog post, I explained exactly how our class representative model is structured. You can read about it here. I applied and was even elected. That made me very happy, because I can play an active role and help shape the future. Since then, I have spoken to many apprentices at TÜV Rheinland and learned what they see as points of criticism and potential for improvement. As an class representative, I address problems and pass them on. It remains to be seen how well this system works. But we remain optimistic, because – you are “only” an apprentice, but you also have a say in this company.

Learned for life

What do I take with me from two years at TÜV Rheinland? Never lose sight of your goal, no matter what obstacles you face. And, of course, I also take great experiences with me! I spent the last six months at TÜV Rheinland LGA Products and before that I got to know the TÜV Rheinland Immobilien GmbH. In both departments I got to know very loving employees who taught me a lot and for whom it was important that an apprentice really learns something. I want to say thank you for that! I have now found a place where I feel very comfortable and where I am appreciated as an apprentice.

Together we can achieve more

With this in mind – a small appeal at the end: Everyone has started a new career at some point and could not do everything from the beginning. Just deal with us apprentices as you would have wished at the time. The whole team and ultimately the whole company benefits from sympathetic interaction, support and young people who enjoy their job.
